Vinery Road Allotments have been in existence at least as far back as the mid-1920s. The purchase of land on Vinery Road for allotments on 7 July 1924 is noted in the Cambridge Corporation sanctions for loans for the purchase of land [Cambridgeshire Archives and Local Studies ref. CB/2/CL/13/16] and the first rules of the Vinery Road Permanent Allotment Society Ltd were registered with the Registrar of Friendly Societies on 26 August 1924.
These pictures were taken by Kirk Tarnelm on the day that Barry South was interviewed by Jenny Mander for his story about the communal development of the allotments (see Individual Stories)
Barry South, chair of the Vinery Rd Allotments and mandolin player in the Cambridge Community Orchestra, talks about the Italian families who grew the less common fruits and vegetables after WW2 – items they struggled to find in English shops – artichokes, peppers, figs, beans, chillis etc.
